A few days ago we talked about redefining your “inner circle.” In that post, I described the need to make sure you have a tight inner circle that you confide in when storms arise. Today, we’re talking about putting up a fence and protecting the circle.
Fences are designed to illustrate borders, they tell us where we can and cannot go. Once you have figured out who you have in your inner circle, it’s time to figure out how to keep unwanted visitors out. I’m not talking about ignoring people or being mean at all. Fences are important, notice we’re not talking about walls, we’re talking about a fence, with a gate that can be opened after much prayer and discernment.
Let me put it this way, your inner circle of friends should not be always changing. Your inner circle should be small and made up of only those people you trust that will not purposely hurt you or gossip about your life. If you’re letting people in that circle on a regular basis, you’re asking for trouble. Keep in mind, people do like to “fake” their way into the circle just for a chance at the latest gossip. It is important to protect the circle you have and keep a fence up so not everyone gets in.
Some people are meant to be acquaintances, some people are just meant to see at work, some are meant to be in your life for only a few moments while others are meant to stay. Creating an inner circle and protecting it and yourself, creates necessary borders that will allow you to enjoy your life. It helps you avoid those toxic people that only bring strife and it helps you enjoy the people God brings into your life and just might change you for the better.
