Allergy Friendly Homemade Laundry Detergent

Skin sensitivities are a big deal in our household. However, purchasing skin sensitive detergent can get very pricey. Several years ago, someone shared with me a homemade laundry detergent recipe that has been amazing for our family. You can add essential oils if you would like some fragrance, my favorite is lavender.

All of these ingredients can be purchased at your local grocery store and most likely, they’re all in the laundry aisle. The recipe below will fill up one mason jar. I always make several jars at a time so I have it on hand.

  • 1 cup Borax
  • 1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
  • 1 Bar of Fels Naptha Soap (or Ivory Soap) Shaved
  • Essential Oils (optional)
  • OxiClean (optional)

Start by grating one bar of soap, you can use either Fels Naptha soap or Ivory.

In the same bowl, add Borax & Washing Soda. Be sure to mix well. At this stage, you can sprinkle some essential oils (found in natural food stores) or add a couple tablespoons of OxiClean for an extra kick if your skin sensitivities allow it.

I personally do not add OxiClean, I believe the detergent works well enough without it but, it’s all personal preference. This is gentle enough to use in place of baby detergents if you’d like.

Use 2 TBS per load. This works well in HE machines too because it is a low-suds formula.
